Assessment-led spinal care

We find the cause before we adjust anything

Firstlight Verge is a chiropractic clinic for people who want to understand their own back, not just be told to come back on Thursday. Every course of care starts with a 45-minute assessment and a plain-English explanation of what we found.

  • Treatment hours

    Mon–Thu 07:30–18:00 · Fri 07:30–13:00

  • Appointment lengths

    First assessment 45 min · follow-up 20 min

  • Referrals

No referral needed to book an assessment

Start with the complaint

Six reasons people book their first visit

Chiropractic care is not one treatment applied to everyone. Find the description closest to your situation — it tells you what we assess first and who the approach tends to suit.

Lane 01

Low back pain that keeps returning

Episodes that settle in a week or two and then come back every few months, often after lifting, long drives or a change in training load.

Assessed first
Lumbar and hip movement, load tolerance, and which positions reproduce the pain.
Lane 02

Neck and shoulder tension from desk work

Stiffness that builds through the afternoon, a tight band across the shoulders, and a neck that feels better on holiday than on Wednesday.

Assessed first
Mid-back mobility, neck rotation range, and how your working setup loads the shoulders.
Lane 03

Headaches starting at the base of the skull

Pressure that rises from the neck into the temples, often with a stiff upper neck and sensitivity to screen glare or jaw clenching.

Assessed first
Upper cervical joint movement, jaw and breathing pattern, and headache triggers over a typical week.
Lane 04

Leg pain or pins and needles

Discomfort travelling from the buttock into the thigh or calf, sometimes worse when sitting, sometimes worse after standing still.

Assessed first
Neurological screening, direction of movement that eases the leg, and whether onward imaging or referral is warranted.
Lane 05

Pregnancy and post-natal back care

Pelvic and low back discomfort through later pregnancy, and the lifting, feeding and carrying loads that follow in the first year.

Assessed first
Pelvic comfort in side-lying, safe positioning options, and lower-force technique selection throughout.
Lane 06

Sport and training overload

A stiff thoracic spine limiting overhead work, a grumbling hip on longer runs, or a mid-season drop in rotation and reach.

Assessed first
Movement under load, left-to-right differences, and how your current training week is structured.

How care runs here

A four-step pathway, agreed before it starts

You will know the plan, the expected number of visits and the review point before any treatment begins. If the plan stops working, we change it rather than repeat it.

  1. 01

    Full assessment

History, movement testing, neurological screening where relevant, and the practical details: your work, sleep position and training week.

    45 minutes

  2. 02

    Findings conversation

What we found, what it means, what we can help with and what we cannot. You leave with the plan written down, including the review date.

    Same appointment

  3. 03

    Active care

Adjustments and soft-tissue work paired with two or three exercises you will actually do. Visits are spaced out as symptoms settle.

    20 minutes per visit

  4. 04

    Review and release

We re-test the measures from day one. If you are where we expected, care ends or moves to occasional check-ins by your choice.

What an adjustment is

Three ways we deliver treatment

The right technique depends on the joint, your comfort and your medical history — not on habit. You can ask for a lower-force option at any visit and it will not change the plan.

Manual adjustment

A quick, shallow, hands-on movement applied to a specific joint to restore its range. The most common choice for a stiff mid-back or a restricted lumbar segment.

You may hear a pop. That is gas moving in the joint fluid, not bone on bone.

Instrument-assisted, low force

A small spring-loaded instrument delivers a measured impulse without any twisting. Used for necks, osteoporosis, later pregnancy and anyone who would rather not be rotated.

It feels like a firm tap. No stretch, no sound, no sudden movement.

Soft-tissue and mobilisation

Sustained pressure, slow joint glides and assisted stretching, usually to calm a region before a joint will tolerate anything faster.

A deep, workable ache during, and a looser region for a day or two after.

Bring with you

  • Clothing you can move in — shorts or leggings and a t-shirt are ideal.
  • A list of current medications and any relevant past injuries.
  • Scan or imaging reports if you already have them; we do not require them.
  • A rough note of when the pain is worst across a normal day.

Your first visit

Forty-five minutes, hour by hour

Nothing in the first appointment is a surprise. Here is the order it runs in, so you can decide whether it suits you before you book.

  1. 0–10 min

    The story

What happened, what you have already tried, and what you want to get back to doing without thinking about it.

  2. 10–25 min

    Physical assessment

Posture, active and passive movement, orthopaedic tests and, where symptoms call for it, reflex and sensation checks.

  3. 25–35 min

    Findings, in plain words

Which joints are restricted, which tissues are irritable, and whether chiropractic care is the right starting point at all.

  4. 35–45 min

    First treatment and homework

If appropriate, a first adjustment on the day, plus two exercises and a written plan with a review date on it.

Before you book

Questions patients actually ask

If your question is not here, write it in the notes field of the booking request and we will answer it before the appointment rather than during it.

How many visits will I need?
Most straightforward complaints are reviewed after four to six visits over three to five weeks, and many people need fewer. You get an estimate in the findings conversation, and the review point is fixed in advance so the plan cannot quietly continue indefinitely.
Does the cracking sound mean something moved out of place?
No. The sound is gas releasing inside the joint capsule as pressure changes, the same mechanism as cracking a knuckle. It is not a bone being put back, and a silent adjustment is not a failed one. Several of our techniques make no sound at all.
Will I be sore afterwards?
Some people feel a mild, dull soreness for up to 24 hours, similar to the day after unfamiliar exercise. Gentle movement, warmth and normal hydration usually settle it. Sharp pain, new numbness or symptoms spreading further down a limb are not expected — tell us and we will reassess before continuing.
Can I come for a neck problem without having it twisted?
Yes. Instrument-assisted and mobilisation approaches treat the neck without rotation, and you can request them at any point, including partway through a visit. It will not shorten your plan or change the fee.
What should I do between appointments?
Keep moving within comfort and do the two or three exercises you were given — they are chosen to be done in under eight minutes, because longer programmes do not get done. Avoid complete rest for more than a day or two unless we specifically advise it.
Do you treat children and older adults?
Yes, with technique and force adapted to age and bone health. Children's appointments are mostly assessment, reassurance and movement advice. For older adults, and for anyone with diagnosed osteoporosis, we default to low-force instrument and mobilisation work.
What if chiropractic is not the right answer for me?
We will say so at the end of the assessment and explain what we think the better route is, whether that is your doctor, imaging, a physiotherapy-led rehab programme or a specialist opinion. Being told the honest answer on day one is cheaper than six visits of hoping.
How do cancellations and rescheduling work?
Let us know at least 24 hours before your appointment and we will move it to the next suitable slot at no cost. Inside 24 hours we may charge for the reserved time, because an unused assessment window usually cannot be offered to anyone else at short notice.

Ask for an assessment window

Send the form and we will come back with two or three specific times that fit the window you chose. Nothing is confirmed until you reply to accept one.

  • What happens nextExpect a reply with time options by the end of the next working day.
  • No referral requiredYou can book an assessment directly; we will write to your doctor only if you ask us to.
  • Not sure it is for youSay so in the notes. We would rather talk you through it than book the wrong appointment.
